Passports & Reports of Birth
 

Welcome to the Passport & Citizenship Unit of the U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh.  We provide all passport and citizenship services for American Citizens resident in Scotland.  We are open for appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  In the event of an emergency requiring a passport service before the next available appointment date please contact us by e-mail to Edinburgh-Info@state.gov.  We are closed to the public on Saturday, Sunday and  American, British and Scottish public holidays.

SERVICES AVAILABLE AT THE CONSULATE GENERAL EDINBURGH

  • Passport services in person.  Services are provided only by pre-arranged appointment.  Please refer to the information on our London embassy website,  http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/fta.html, for details of application procedures including documents to be provided, fees and application forms.  When you have read all the instructions please book an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 7 – Scheduling the appointment. 
  • Passport services by mail.  If you qualify for passport renewal services by mail please refer to the instructions on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/renindex.html
  • Children under 16.  There are additional requirements when renewing passports for children under the age of 16.  Please refer to the information on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/under16.html.  When you have read all the instructions please book an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 6 – Scheduling the Appointment. 
  • Lost or Stolen Passports.  You are advised to report the loss/theft of your passport to the local Scottish police force in the area in which it occurred.  You should submit the application to replace the passport and report the loss/theft as soon as possible.   • Damaged Passports.  Damaged passports should be replaced as soon as possible regardless of the remaining validity.  Please refer to the instructions on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/damaged.html.  When you have read all the information please book an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 6 – Scheduling the Appointment.  
  • Second Passports.  It is the general policy of the Department of State that no-one may hold more than one valid passport at a time.  In exceptional circumstances the issuance of a second limited validity passport may be authorized, for example if need to travel but your primary passport is unavailable due to prolonged delays processing a foreign visa application.   Second passports are valid for two years and cannot be extended.  Each application for a second passport will be considered on its merits and will be approved only where justified.  Please refer to information on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/second.html.   When you have read all the information please book an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 5 – Scheduling the Appointment.
  • Extra Pages.  If your passport is still valid and in good condition you may apply to have extra visa pages added.  Please refer to the instructions on our London embassy website.  You may apply in person at the Edinburgh Consulate General 9am-12:30pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays, no appointment is necessary for this service, or by mail to our London embassy http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/extra_pages_edinburgh.html.
  • Name Changes.  If you have changed your name you may apply to have a passport issued in your new name.  There are several methods of changing your name and the documentary requirements vary according to the method used.  Please refer to the instructions on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/namechangeindex.html.  When you have read all the information please book an appointment  at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 5 – Scheduling the Appointment. 
  • Photo Requirements.  U.S. passport photograph requirements differ from those for British passports.  We cannot accept photographs that do not meet the requirements as described on our London embassy website, http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/photo.html.  You can also access a list of photographers in Scotland from that page. 
  • Passport Fees.  The Consulate General Edinburgh cannot accept payment by cash or personal check.  Payment must be made by credit or debit card or International Money Order made payable to “U.S. Disbursing Officer” for the exact dollar amount.  Please refer to the list of fees published on our London embassy website http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/passport_fees.html.
  • Reports of Birth.  If your child is under the age of 18, was born in Scotland and has a claim to U.S. citizenship by virtue of birth abroad to a U.S. citizen parent you must apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) for the child before a U.S. passport can be issued.  The U.S. citizen parent(s) must submit the application at the Edinburgh Consulate General.  The child must attend the appointment.  If the child was born out of wedlock to a U.S. citizen father and non-U.S. citizen mother the mother must also attend the appointment.  It is preferable that both parents attend the appointment wherever possible.   The CRBA is proof that your child acquired citizenship at birth.  Please refer to the information on our London embassy website.  http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/robirth4.html.  When you have read all the instructions please book an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General at Step 5 – Scheduling the Appointment   You must comply with the instruction to provide the requested  application paperwork at least 7 days in advance of your appointment
  • Claiming U.S. Citizenship.  You may have a claim to U.S. citizenship if you were born either overseas to a U.S. citizen parent who meets the requirements for the transmission of citizenship or in the United States.  If you believe you have a claim to U.S. citizenship please contact us by e-mail to Edinburgh-Info@state.gov or by writing to U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh – Consular Section, 3 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BW
  • Renuncitiation of U.S. Citizenship.  A U.S. citizen who wishes to renounce their citizenship must, voluntarily and with the intention of renouncing their citizenship, appear before a consular officer and sign an oath/affirmation of renunciation.  Renunciation can only take place outside the United States.  If you wish to renounce your citizenship please send an e-mail to Edinburgh-Info@state.gov or write to U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh, Consular Section, 3 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BW stating that you wish to renounce your citizenship and including your mailing address so that we can send you further information.  Information on the legal basis for renunciation can be found on our London embassy website http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/renunciation.html

Note that public restrooms are not available in the U.S. Consulate. The nearest public restrooms are located at the corner of London Road and Easter Road or in the St James’ Centre.
