Passports, Reports of Birth and Citizenship

 

Welcome to the Passport & Citizenship Unit of the U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh.  We provide all passport and citizenship services for American Citizens resident in Scotland.  Please note that we cannot accept cash - all services at the U.S. Consulate General in Edinburgh must be paid for by credit or debit cards only

We are open for appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  In the event of an emergency requiring a passport service before the next available appointment date please contact us by e-mail to

We are closed to the public on Saturday, Sunday and  American, British and Scottish public holidays.

Public restrooms are not available in the Edinburgh Consulate General.

SERVICES AVAILABLE AT THE CONSULATE GENERAL EDINBURGH

  • Passport services by mail.  Save time!  You can renew your passport by mail as long as your current passport:  Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application; was issued within the last 15 years; Was issued with 10 year validity; and was issued in your current name or you have changed your name and can submit legal documentation (e.g. marriage certificate, Statutory Declaration).  Click here for renewal instructions.
  • Passport Fees.  Consulate General Edinburgh cannot accept payment by cash or personal check.  Payment must be made by credit or debit card or International Money Order made payable to “U.S. Disbursing Officer” for the exact dollar amount.  Please refer to the list of fees.
  • Passport services in person.  Non-emergency services are provided by appointment only.  Application instructions can be found here. When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.  
  • Children under 16.  There are additional requirements when renewing passports for children under the age of 16.  Application instructions can be found here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.
  • Lost or Stolen Passports.  Report the loss/theft of your passport to the local Scottish police force and replace the passport and report the loss/theft to us as soon as possible Application instructions can be found here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.  
  • Damaged Passports.  Damaged passports should be replaced as soon as possible regardless of remaining validity.  Application instructions can be found here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.  
  • Second Passports.  In exceptional circumstances the issuance of a second limited validity passport may be authorized, for example if you need to travel but your primary passport is unavailable due to processing a foreign visa application.  Be advised if you are changing status with the Home Office, departing the UK may impact your application.  Second passports are valid for two years and cannot be extended.  Each application for a second passport will be considered on its merits and approved only if justified.  Application instructions can be found here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.
  • Extra Pages.  If your passport is still valid and in good condition you may apply for extra visa pages.  You may apply in person at the Edinburgh Consulate General 9am-12:30pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  No appointment is necessary.  Application instructions can be found here
  • Name Changes.  If you have changed your name you may apply to have a passport issued in your new name.  There are several methods of changing your name and the documentary requirements vary according to the method used.  Application instructions can be found here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General.
  • Reports of Birth.  If your child is under the age of 18, was born in Scotland, and has a claim to U.S. citizenship by virtue of birth abroad to a U.S. citizen parent you must apply for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) for the child before a U.S. passport can be issued.  General pplication information can be found here, and information specific to Consulate General Edinburgh is here.  When you have read all the instructions use the link at the bottom of that page to schedule an appointment at the Edinburgh Consulate General. 
  • Claiming U.S. Citizenship.  You may have a claim to U.S. citizenship if you were born either overseas to a U.S. citizen parent who meets the requirements for the transmission of citizenship or in the United States.  If you believe you have a claim to U.S. citizenship please contact us by e-mail to Edinburgh-Info@state.gov or by writing to U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh – Consular Section, 3 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BW
  • Renunciation of U.S. Citizenship.  Renouncing your citizenship is a serious decision.  You must appear in person, by appointment only, to execute the oath.  If you wish to renounce your citizenship please send an e-mail to Edinburgh-Info@state.gov or write to U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh, Consular Section, 3 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BW including your mailing address so that we can send you further information.  Information on the legal basis for renunciation can be found here.
